How to Be a Rich Old Lady
by Amanda Holden
Why I picked it up
Honestly, with a title like How to Be a Rich Old Lady, I had to pick it up. I’m already interested in investing and building long-term financial security, but I especially appreciate books that make money feel approachable - and connect it to the kind of life we actually want to create.
My thoughts
This is an investing book without the finance-bro energy. Amanda Holden explains wealth-building in a clear, funny and encouraging way, without making the reader feel foolish for not already knowing how everything works. It’s practical enough to help someone begin taking action, but it never loses sight of the reason for doing any of it: money should support your life, not become your entire life.
One important note for Canadian readers is that the book is written from an American perspective, so some of the retirement accounts and tax rules don’t translate directly to Canada. The broader lessons about investing consistently, automating what you can and understanding what you own are still very useful. You’ll just need to apply them within Canadian accounts such as TFSAs and RRSPs.
My biggest takeaway
Building wealth doesn’t require becoming obsessed with the stock market or finding the next hot investment. A straightforward plan, followed consistently over time, can do an enormous amount of the work…and then you can get back to living your life.
Who I’d recommend it to
Women who know they should be doing more with their money but feel intimidated, overwhelmed or unsure where to begin. It’s also a great read for anyone who wants financial education delivered with humour, honesty and absolutely no condescension.
